Health Testimony: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) - Rose Ann Faurillo

What are the signs of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?

The most common signs and symptoms of PCOS include:
  • Irregular Periods: Abnormal menstruation involves missing periods or not having a period at all. It may also involve heavy bleeding during periods.
  • Abnormal Hair Growth: You may grow excess facial hair or experience heavy hair growth on your arms, chest and abdomen (hirsutism). This affects up to 70% of people with PCOS.
  • Acne: PCOS can cause acne, especially on your back, chest and face. This acne may continue past your teenage years and may be difficult to treat.
  • Obesity: Between 40% and 80% of people with PCOS have obesity and have trouble maintaining a weight that’s healthy for them.
  • Darkening of the Skin: You may get patches of dark skin, especially in the folds of your neck, armpits, groin (between the legs) and under your breasts. This is known as acanthosis nigricans.
  • Cysts: Many people with PCOS have ovaries that appear larger or with many follicles (egg sac cysts) on ultrasound.
  • Skin Tags: Skin tags are little flaps of extra skin. They’re often found in your armpits or on your neck.
  • Thinning Hair: People with PCOS may lose patches of hair on their head or start to bald.
  • Infertility: PCOS is the most common cause of female infertility. Not ovulating regularly or frequently can result in not being able to conceive.

Kidney-Friendly Diet

Kidney-friendly diet to lower your creatinine levels, promote overall kidney health
By: Zarafshan Shiraz, New Delhi

The best way to lower creatinine level is to treat the underlying kidney disease. Here are foods to lower your creatinine levels

Creatinine is a natural waste product produced by muscles during regular wear and tear and it exits the body through urine but in cases of impaired kidney function, it can accumulate in the blood. High creatinine level can be a sign of serious health condition but also be a temporary byproduct of certain lifestyle factors or conditions hence, any treatment or lifestyle changes undertaken for high creatinine levels should be under a guidance of healthcare provider.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Atit Dharia, Consultant - Nephrology at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai, shared, “Creatinine is a muscle breakdown product, formed due to hydrolysis of creatine and phosphocreatine. Creatinine is endogenously produced in the human body and freely filtered by the kidneys. Therefore, serum creatinine concentration is utilized as an indirect measure of ‘kidney function’ and is the commonest biomarker used in estimation of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)’. A normal level depends on the age, gender, race and body size (muscle mass). High creatinine levels may be a sign of kidney disease.”

He explained, “Creatinine levels in the blood can temporarily rise after strenuous exercise and consuming certain medications like trimethoprim and should always be enquired if high serum concentration is noted. If temporary causes of high creatinine concentration are ruled out, then the best way to lower creatinine level is to treat the underlying kidney disease. Along with medications and other treatments, your healthcare provider can suggest certain lifestyle changes including dietary advice which are appropriate for you and can help in naturally lowering your creatinine levels.”

Dr Atit Dharia highlighted, “Creatine, which is a pre-cursor of creatinine is an oral supplement used by athlete and body builders for performance enhancement. Such supplements can increase creatinine level in patients with kidney disease and is best avoided till we have further research. High protein diet, esp. cooked red meat is known to increase creatinine levels. Patients with known kidney ailments in which they are losing protein in their urine, decreasing protein intake in their diet is known to decrease creatinine level and slow the progression of kidney disease. Foods rich in fiber like fruits, vegetables, legumes can help in reducing creatinine levels in people with kidney disease.”

He elaborated, “Over the counters medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may harm the kidneys if taken too often or in amounts over the recommended dosage, in particular if there is underlying kidney disease. Cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are known risk factors for chronic kidney disease. Fluid intake is a very tricky subject in patients with kidney disease. Dehydration can raise creatinine levels. Excessive fluid intake can also be an issue for people with kidney disease. Talk to your doctor about how much water and other fluids you should drink daily.”

Bringing her expertise to the same, Sushma PS, Chief Dietician at Jindal Naturecure Institute, said, “Maintaining good hydration and making dietary adjustments can help lower creatinine levels. Reducing consumption of red meat and fish, along with incorporating a high-fiber diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, can effectively bring down creatinine levels.”

For individuals with elevated creatinine levels, she recommended the following foods -

Fruits: Antioxidant-rich options like cranberries, kiwi, apples and blueberries aid in lowering creatinine levels.

Vegetables: Including a variety of vegetables like bitter gourd, eggplant, carrot, cauliflower, red bell pepper, cucumber and onions helps regulate creatinine levels.

Spices: Cinnamon, known for its kidney-friendly properties, can be added to the diet to help manage creatinine levels.

Nettle Leaf Tea: Consuming 1-2 cups a day can serve as a powerful kidney tonic, potentially improving kidney function and reducing serum creatinine levels.

Plant-Based Proteins: Consider substituting some or all of your animal protein sources with plant-based options like beans, lentils, and tofu.

The nutrition expert revealed, “These foods not only provide valuable plant-based protein but are also recommended as part of a kidney-friendly diet to manage creatinine levels and promote overall kidney health. Research has indicated that high-quality protein sources like beans, lentils, and tofu can enhance kidney function and decrease the risk of kidney disease. Additionally, these options are low in potassium, which is crucial for individuals with kidney disease who need to monitor their potassium intake.”

5 Vegetarian Foods that Boost Vitamin E for Glowing Skin and How to Eat them Every Day

Glowing skin is rarely the result of just creams or serums. More often, it starts with what’s on your plate. Among the quiet heroes in nutrition, vitamin E stands out: it shields the skin from damage, keeps it supple, and helps slow down those fine lines that arrive too early in our lives. The good news? You don’t need to chase supplements. Everyday vegetarian foods, the kind you already know, can give your body more than enough. The trick is in how you fold them into daily eating.

Almonds

There’s a reason grandmothers insisted on a few soaked almonds before school. They are one of the richest natural sources of vitamin E - about 20 almonds cover nearly half your day’s need. Beyond that, their healthy fats nourish the skin barrier, keeping it elastic.

You don’t need to overcomplicate it. Eat them soaked in the morning, or roasted and salted with your tea. Crush them into chutney, stir them into porridge, or grind them into a paste for curries that taste fuller. It’s the kind of habit that doesn’t show up overnight, but weeks later you notice your skin feels better hydrated, less tired.

Sunflower Seeds

Tiny, crunchy, almost invisible in the pantry - sunflower seeds are vitamin E powerhouses. Just two spoonfuls can cross more than half your daily requirement. They bring along magnesium and selenium too, quietly helping your hair and nails along with your skin.

Keep a jar within arm’s reach. Sprinkle them over a salad or soup just before you eat. Blend them into pesto instead of pine nuts, or stir them into yogurt with a drizzle of honey. Roast them with chili and salt if you like something spiced - they’re addictive that way. Small, unassuming, but remarkable.

Spinach

Spinach is often praised for iron, but its vitamin E content deserves equal attention. A cup of cooked spinach gives you about a fifth of what you need daily. Pairing it with something acidic like tomato, lemon, tamarind makes that nutrition more accessible.

Think of spinach not as a separate dish but as a fold-in ingredient. Add a handful to dal before switching off the flame. Blitz it into your morning smoothie, where banana will hide its grassy taste. Stir-fry it quickly with garlic and finish with lemon juice. These tiny additions, made daily, matter more than the rare, elaborate palak paneer dinner.

Avocado

Avocado is trendy, yes, but it earns its spot. With vitamin E and healthy fats working together, it keeps skin cells moisturized and resilient. Half a fruit gives you close to 15% of your day’s needs.

Slice it over toast with chili flakes and lemon juice. Toss it into a salad bowl. Blend it into cocoa and honey for a creamy dessert that feels too indulgent to be healthy. Sometimes, just spoon it straight from the skin with a pinch of salt - food at its simplest, doing quiet work for your skin.

Peanuts

Practical, affordable, and often quite underrated, peanuts carry vitamin E along with protein — both of which naturally help the skin gently repair and protect itself. Just two spoonfuls of plain peanut butter (the kind without any added sugar) give you around 10% of your daily vitamin E dose.

You already know the easy, simple ways: peanut butter on toast, blended into a morning smoothie, or spread neatly on apple slices. But there’s more you can easily try – toss roasted peanuts into hot poha, grind them into a tasty chutney for soft idlis, or roast them well with curry leaves, spices, and a little ghee for a crunchy evening snack. It’s not glamorous, but your skin honestly doesn’t care – it just gratefully uses whatever good nutrition it gets.

What Foods Should I Buy Organic?

The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides is a key resource for consumers who want to minimize their exposure to pesticides. The Shopper’s Guide will help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues and are the most important to buy organic. You can lower your pesticide consumption by nearly 80% by avoiding the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables and instead eating the least contaminated produce, according to EWG calculations.

The health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure. Use EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides™ to reduce your exposures as much as possible, but eating conventionally-grown produce is far better than not eating fruits and vegetables at all. The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ will help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues and are the most important to buy organic. You can lower your pesticide intake by avoiding the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables and choosing the least contaminated produce.

For the second year, we have expanded the Dirty Dozen™ with a Plus category to highlight two crops – domestically-grown summer squash and leafy greens, specifically kale and collards. These crops did not meet traditional Dirty Dozen™ criteria but were commonly contaminated with pesticides exceptionally toxic to the nervous system.

Though the Environmental Protection Agency has been restricting the uses of the most toxic pesticides, they are still detected on some foods. For example, green beans were on last year's Plus list because they were often contaminated with two highly toxic organophosphates. Those pesticides are being withdrawn from agriculture. But leafy greens still show residues of organophosphates and other risky pesticides. That's why they are on the Plus list for 2013.

Tests in 2008 found that some domestically-grown summer squash – zucchini and yellow crookneck squash -- contained residues of harmful organochlorine pesticides that were phased out of agriculture in the 1970s and 1980s but that linger on some farm fields.

Use the Environmental Working Group's Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides to reduce your exposure as much as possible, because eating conventionally-grown produce is far better than not eating fruits and vegetables at all.

Top 10 Reason To Add Bee Pollen To Your Diet

10 Reason To Add Bee Pollen To Your Diet

Bee Pollen is a holistic remedy used throughout the world. Unfortunately the vast amount of uses that pollen can be used for are often overlooked.

Dr. Gabriel Cousens MD, has listed bee pollen as one of his 22 most recommended food energies.

Bee Pollen is made by honeybees, it is loaded with antioxidants and is nature's most complete nourishing foods.

Pollen contains nearly all nutrients required by humans, free amino acids, rutin, vitamins, including B-complex, and folic acid and is rich in protein. Bee Pollen can be used medicinally for a wide range of conditions from prostate health to skin conditions and can help correct specific nutritional imbalances within the body.

Here are just 10 great reasons to add fresh bee pollen to your daily diet… although there are many more! :
  1. Energy Enhancer - The range of nutrients found within bee pollen makes it a great natural energizer. The carbohydrates, protein and B vitamins can help keep you going all day by enhancing stamina and fighting off fatigue.
  2. Skin Soother - Bee pollen is often used in topical products that aim to treat inflammatory conditions and common skin irritations like psoriasis or eczema. The amino acids and vitamins protect the skin and aid the regeneration of cells.
  3. Respiratory System - Bee pollen contains a high quantity of antioxidants that may have an anti-inflammatory effect on the tissues of the lungs, preventing the onset of asthma.
  4. Treating Allergies – Pollen reduces the presence of histamine, ameliorating many allergies. Dr. Leo Conway, M.D of Denver Colorado, reported that 94 percent of his patients were completely free from allergy symptoms once treated with oral feeding of pollen. Everything from asthma to allergies to sinus problems were cleared, confirming that bee pollen is wonderfully effective against a wide range of respiratory diseases.
  5. Digestive System - In addition to healthful vitamins, minerals and protein, bee pollen contains enzymes that can aid in digestion. Enzymes assist your body in getting all the nutrients you need from the food that you eat.
  6. Immune System Booster - Pollen is good for the intestinal flora and thereby supports the immune system. According to holistic health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola, bee pollen has antibiotic-type properties that can help protect the body from contracting viruses. It's also rich in antioxidants that protect the cells from the damaging oxidation of free radicals.
  7. Treats Addictions – Used holistically for healing addictions and inhibiting cravings by suppressing impulses. Because bee pollen crashes cravings, it is a very useful research is needed into this benefit, particularly when it comes to weight management.
  8. Supports the Cardiovascular System - Bee Pollen contains large amounts of Rutin; an antioxidant bioflavonoid that helps strengthen capillaries, blood vessels, assists with circulatory problems and corrects cholesterol levels. Its potent anticlotting powers could help prevent heart attack and stroke.
  9. Prostate Aid - Men who suffer from benign prostate hyperplasia can find relief by using bee pollen. Bee pollen can help reduce inflammation to stop frequent urges to urinate.
  10. Infertility Problems - Bee pollen stimulates and restores ovarian function, therefore may be used to assist in accelerating pregnancy. As well as being a hormonal booster it is also a great aphrodisiac!
How should pollen be consumed?

Bee pollen is a food and acts faster and more effectively when taken at mealtime and especially with fruit, which let it gently, perform a little cleansing of the intestinal flora.

A spoonful at breakfast, preferably taken with a piece of fruit: the fruit fibers (raw hemicellulose) reinforce the activity of the fresh pollen.

*You'lll be pleased to know that bee keepers are able to remove pollen from hives without harming the bees or disturbing their routine.

Ganoderma has always been shrouded with a mysterious curtain for more than a thousand years. People only know ‘‘Ganodermas can keep one young and give one a long life if taken continuously”, but no one had ever scientifically investigated why it is so effective.

Important components of Ganoderma:
  • Organic Germanium (Ge): Can increase the oxygen absorbed by the blood up to 1.5 times: can promote metabolism: prevent tissue degeneration. According to the research of Dr Kazuhiko Asai, Ganoderma contains 800 – 2000 p.p.m. of germanium. This is 4-6 times more than ginseng.
  • Polysaccharides: These can improve the body’s immune system, eliminate viruses. Japanese pharmaceutical companies have refined it to medical quality and it has been approved by the Koseisho Health Department in Japan for insurance medicine.
Its bitter taste. It is under constant study by the Japanese medical and pharmaceutical fields. The efficacy is a result of the interrelation of germanium and polysaccharides. Some plants may contain one or the other, but Ganoderma is much more effective. The combination of components is different from other plants and all of the components must be preserved to insure efficiency.

Ano Ang Insulin?

INSULIN AT DIABETES
